Lord Macintosh, of the Department of Culture Media and sport has spoken out in defense of the Gambling Bill, amid a climate of media hysteria and public skepticism, claiming that everyone seems to be ‘missing the point’.

'I've never known a bill be so misunderstood,' he said. 'More than 90 per cent of this bill is about protection and not about casinos. It's about keeping out crime and cheating and introducing new protections for children and adults who may be vulnerable to problem gambling.'

Lord Macintosh said that fears that the Bill would lead to Vegas style casinos on every street corner, which has led to widespread outcry and the Daily Mail launching a ‘Kill the Bill’ campaign, are unfounded and ill informed.

The new Bill classifies these so-called Super casinos as ‘regional casinos’ because they must be 5,000 sq m or more. Macintosh explained that the government has, ‘made it impossible’ for there to be a large number of regional casinos. 'There will be very few for market reasons. It will not be possible for the vast majority of people to walk into one off the street on their way home from work.'
