Online Casino Detractor Wins at the Races
In America, one of online gambling's most passionate detractors has reportedly received almost $40,000 in campaign contributions from the horse racing industry, which is increasingly benefiting from his attacks on Internet gambling.
According to an article on Gambling Web late last week, Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, has consistently been an ardent supporter of anti-online gambling legislation that gives inequitable carve-outs for Internet betting through state lotteries, fantasy sports and horse racing in the United States.
The article states that the horse racing industry has taken advantage of the ban on online gambling through the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which seeks to prohibit financial transactions with online gambling companies, to expand onto the Internet itself.
Goodlatte has been frequently quoted as supporting the view that online gambling is immoral and has been vociferous in his efforts to get online gambling banned. Last month, he appeared before the House Judiciary Committee hearing on online gambling assembled by Congressman John Conyers and insisted that UIGEA be enforced with criminal prosecutions.
