European Poker Award for Annette Obrestad
It must be hard being Annette Obrestad. Once again the Norweigan prodigy has won – this time it was at the prestigious European Poker Awards in Paris, and not on the felt.
It has been a remarkable year for Obrestad, who was the winner at the this year’s World Series of Poker Europe as well as second at the EPT Dublin weeks later. The achievement was hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by Nic Szeremeta who presented the award. She had to overcome what was considered ‘one of the toughest fields in poker’ to win £1,000,000.
Obrestad beat fellow nominees Carlos Mortensen and Bruno Fitoussi to take down the title. Mortensen had won $3.97m at the WPT in Las Vegas whilst Fitoussi was second in the biggest buy in event at the WSOP, the $50,000 HORSE event.
Annette was also nominated in two other categories; ‘Leading Lady’ and ‘Rookie of the Year’. She was narrowly pipped to the Leading Lady award by Katja Thater, who had also won a WSOP bracelet in Las Vegas at the $1,500 Razz event.
On receiving the award, Annette had this to say:
“I am so happy to win this award. I prefer this one to the Rookie of the Year because I was up against such great players.”
“I am still learning so much. There are still a lot of areas of my live game that can improve. My instincts, my ability to know what certain tells mean. But I am getting better all the time.”
If that’s the case, the rest of us – European or not – had better look out.
