Increase in slot machine numbers in US predicted by industry
Feedback from the Global Gaming Expo’s opening session has shown that industry experts and manufacturers believe that slot machines in the US will see a period of growth over the next two years. The opinion expressed so far is that due to the competition across the states in the US, sales of slot machines and as a result the revenue earned by them will increase significantly.
The kick start to this predicted shift, coined as the domino effect, is the change in legislation made in Pennsylvania in July, which allowed the introduction of slot machines at tracks. It is expected now that other states will push to follow the example set, particularly in the neighbouring states of New York, Kentucky, Ohio and Maryland. The main motivation in following suit is to prevent the residents of their own state from travelling to another to spend their gambling money elsewhere.
The industry representatives also expressed a belief that Florida is 50 percent likely to also legalise slot machines at tracks, when faced with competition from the North eastern states who have expanded racetrack operations by adding casino facilities. The estimated growth in numbers, despite the anticipated legal difficulties faced by other areas of gambling, is that slot machine orders will increase by approximately 150,000. The number could go up to 175,000 with orders expected to increase from tribal casinos and racetracks across the US. Should this prediction prove to be correct, the total slot machine presence in the US would increase from 650,000 to 800,000 by the end of 2007.
