The Giants are coming off a convincing 27-10 home win over Cleveland. The G-Men are now 2-1 both SU and ATS in the Tom Coughlin era with their only setback coming against the soaring Eagles.
We throw caution in the wind, however, as New York’s wins have both come at home vs. questionable opponents in Washington and Cleveland. Note also that NY benefited from a +9 turnover advantage in those two respective contests.
Coughlin has our respect as a solid coach and we think he is turning the Giants' ship around. But we’re not at all sure the G-Men are as good as they’ve looked thus far.
The exact opposite can be said about the Packers. Green Bay dropped to 1-2 both SU and ATS after falling to the Colts on the road 45-31 as a 6.5-point underdog. The Packers actually outgained Indy and had the ball late with an opportunity to tie the game up. But GB WR Javon Walker fumbled away their chances and a last second TD by the Colts made the final score a bit misleading.
A 14-point swing on a fumble by Ahman Green vs. an underrated Bears team also proved the kiss of death in their week two loss. With less than two minutes to go before halftime, Green was stripped on 1st down from the Bears two yard line by Brian Urlacher, allowing SS Mike Brown to scoop up the ball and run the other way for a 95 yard TD. Instead of being up 14-3, the Packers found themselves down 10-7 at the half. GB outgained Chicago by 97 yards in that contest.
We should note that Brett Favre injured his calf last week vs. the Colts. But if history is any indication, the 14-year pro out of Southern Mississippi—who made his NFL-record 192nd consecutive start this past week—will be ready to go this Sunday. No. 4 also revealed that he has been playing with an injured shoulder to his non-throwing arm for two years.
When asked about it by reporters after Sunday’s loss, Favre quipped “But I feel like Mel Gibson in 'Lethal Weapon.' It's just kind of loose and kind of wobbles around and pops out from time to time. As long as it pops back, I'm OK.”
Shoulder in socket or not, Favre is an eye-popping 10-0 SU and 8-2 ATS at home off back-to-back SU losses. Moreover, the Packers are now 26-10 ATS their past thirty-six at Lambeau vs. teams with a winning record.
This is quite a bit of chalk for our tastes, but Green Bay has played the tougher schedule, is in an early must-win situation and should be focused enough to grab the SU win and cover.
