This has all the makings of being an extremely high scoring affair. Minnesota will be sending Lohse to the hill and he carries a towering 6.08 ERA and 1.81 WHIP overall. When dissecting his numbers, we are actually surprised his ERA is not much higher. Lohse has 23 strike outs vs. 29 walks this season and has let runners reach base at a .404 clip. We should also note that the Twins are 6-3 (o/u) when Lohse takes the hill this year. The most compelling aspect about Lohse is in this situation, however, is that his atrocious numbers are actually better than his Tampa Bay counterpart. Zambrano checks in with a 6.18 ERA and 1.71 WHIP overall. Over his past three starts, Zambrano’s ERA skyrockets to 14.73 with an unheard of 3.00 WHIP. He has 10 strike outs vs. 18 walks during this same span. Ouch!!!
In addition to the horrendous pitching, we have some fairly compelling offensive stats here as well. Minnesota comes into this contest averaging 5.4 runs per game against righties and 5.6 runs per game their last seven overall. This offensive production combined with some dicey pitching puts Minnesota at 7-1 (o/u) their past eight games and 5-0 (o/u) their past five games. More specifically, their last five respective contests have produced 24 runs, 10 runs, 10 runs, 13 runs and 11 runs, which is an average of 13.4 per game. And while the Devil Rays are for the most part anemic on offense, they are actually hitting the ball quit well right now. Consider that TB has scored 5 runs, 6 runs, 5 runs and 9 runs their past four contests. We should also mention that these two teams are 4-1 (o/u) their past five meetings. With horrible pitching, some fairly solid bats and technical evidence to boot; we’ll call for this one to sail “Over” the posted total.
