Courts rule out Leicester casino
Magistrates have refused to grant a licence for a £8.7 million casino in Leicester after considering the case for five days.
According to the Leicester Mercury, the courts refused Clermont Leisure a casino licence, claiming that there are already three casinos and no demand for a fourth.
Gala and Stanley Leisure, which both own Leicester casinos, had moved to block the plans that would have seen a new casino occupy the ground floor of the nine-storey building next to St George's Tower.
However Clermont's lawyers told the courts that the casino would provide a "different atmosphere" to the existing facilities, incorporating a business suite, lounge bar, spa and restaurant. There would also be two private rooms for people who wanted to gamble off the main floor.
According to the Leicester Mercury, lawyer Andrew Woods said: "A significant feature was providing a different atmosphere. It all was about providing a distinct kind of gaming activity.
"The only people objecting to the application were from the casino trade themselves, Stanley Leisure, and Gala."
It is now feared that two four-star hotel operators which were interested in providing facilities in St George's Tower will be put off the area.
