Coral and Ladbrokes Get Turf TV

In the UK, bookmakers Coral and Ladbrokes have broken ranks with fellow operators William Hill and BetFred and signed five-year contracts with Amalgamated Racing to utilise its Turf TV service in their betting office estates.

Turf TV is a joint venture between 31 of the UK's 59 licensed racecourses and software supplier Alphameric and allows punters to watch live horseracing from anywhere in the country. The latest deals bring the total number of licensed betting offices showing the service to more than 6,000 with Alan Morcombe, Chief Executive for Alphameric, calling the decision ‘excellent news’.

'Within a year of launching the business, Turf TV has now signed up a good majority of the licensed betting offices in Great Britain and Ireland,' said Morcombe.

Coral has a 1,560-strong estate of betting offices and also agreed to drop litigation against Alphameric.

Other betting chains already signed up include Tote, Paddy Power, Stan James and Boylesports and these latest deals will put pressure on rival betting firms William Hill and BetFred to negotiate a fellow deal with Amalgamated Racing.

According to the Financial Times newspaper, Ladbrokes agreed to pay $12,908 for each of its 2,200 betting shops to use Turf TV with the deal for ‘at least’ five years expected to be worth as much as $138 million.
