According to the Associated Press news agency, a lawmaker in the small American state of Rhode Island is to file legislation in the General Assembly that would allow two slot parlors to become full-scale casinos.
Representative William San Bento has also offered a related bill that would allow the state’s two existing casinos, Twin River and Newport Grand, to operate around-the-clock. San Bento stated that he expects a vote on this measure within a couple of weeks.
In a non-binding referendum held last year, voters in the town of Lincoln rejected the idea of 24-hour gambling at Twin Rivers but San Bento told the Cape Cod Times that he wants to move quickly on the gambling measures to help the state close an estimated $450 million budget deficit.
The Twin Rivers Casino is managed by the same developers who are working with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe of native Americans on a proposed casino in nearby Middleborough in the state of Massachusetts but a bill filed last year by Governor Deval Patrick to allow three resort casinos in the state has yet to be heard by the Legislature.
