Day 1C at the Aussie Millions Comes to an End

After the fields of Days 1A and 1B had been saturated with pros, Day 1C was far less dangerous for the average poker player. That said, there were still some big names playing, including Howard Lederer, Brad Booth, Annette Obrestad, Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow, Kenna James and Jon ‘PearlJammer’ Turner.

In total 270 players played Day 1C, meaning this year’s Main Event has a total of 780 contestants. First prize is AUS $1.65 million, $150,000 more than Gus Hansen won the previous year.

Brad Booth’s quest for a big payday started out well, running his table over with his traditional aggressive brand of poker. In one memorable hand – for his opponent at least – Booth’s Q-T flopped the nuts against the pocket Aces of the soon to be eliminated opponent. However the upsurge was soon met by a down stroll, and Booth ended up on the rail after his AK lost against QQ.

The rest of the day saw most of the attention focused on two tough looking tables. The first had the super-egos of Mike Matusow and APPT-Macau High-Rollers champ Eric Assadourian, as well as Tiffany Williamson and Kofi 'Redsoxsox' Farkye. The verbals jabs between Matusow and Assadourian continued throughout the day before Assadourian finally left after his pocket fives were rivered by a set of deuces.

The other table featured Shane Warne, poker’s latest disciple, as well as Alex Kravchenko and Anna Wroblewski. As players left, tougher ones appeared, with Kevin O’Donnell and Annette Obrestad joining the table, with Jon Turner joining proceedings late in the day.

Wroblewski was knocked out after her pocket Kings seemed good on a 7s-5h-2d-3c board, but her opponents 72o managed to seal her fate. Obrestad then had pocket Aces cracked by pocket Eights, effectively ending her chances of winning in Melboure.

Play finished with 120 players left, and Soren Erickson sits on the chip lead with 150,000. Kenna James is in close contention on around 100,000, whilst Lederer, Matusow and Peter Jepsen are still in contention.
