Tran pleads guilty to casino scam
A casino cheat has pleaded guilty to charges of taking more than $2 million from Casino Rama as part of a high-stakes gambling scam.
John Tran, who is not as good a poker player as his namesake, is believed to be one of the top bosses in a ring that targeted Casino Rama along with other meccas across the US.
Having to cheat to win money, the 27-year-old has been ordered to pay all winnings back by an Orillia court and faces charges of cheating at play and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
Tran had been employed by the casino and is charged, with colleagues, of dodgy dealings.
Eighteen other people were arrested last May after nearly four years of investigation by the FBI and US police.
In the past week three people who had worked at the casino were arrested after police allege that $2 million was stolen from Casino Rama through cheating.
Fifteen of the people accused are resident in Ontario and are charged with predetermining the outcome of card games.
One man is another sound-alike - Toronto's Nguyen Chung is no relation of the famous poker player but is still charged and will face the courts in February.
