Sunderland Casino could be closed
The Gala Casino in Sunderland could be shut down according to reports.
The Sunderland Echo states that the casino is in talks with staff over plans to shut the venue.
"We have begun consultation with staff about possible closure," a Gala spokeswoman told the paper.
"This will take about six weeks. We are looking at all the different options.
"There are lots of different reasons. The industry has been impacted by external factors in the last year an unexpected tax increase in the budget, the smoking ban.
"There are a lot of factors that have made us come to this decision to start the consultation process."
Many have been surprised by the plans to close the casino as it only opened three years ago and is situated in the High Street West regeneration area.
It is part of the Limelight leisure development, which also contains a multi-screen cinema, restaurants and bars.
