Supercasino decision 'madness'
Manchester City Council may consider a judicial review of the government's apparent decision to axe plans for the supercasino.
According to the BBC, the decision to finally junk all plans for a supercasino in Manchester will be announced in the House of Commons after the half-term recess.
The council has admitted it is surprised at the government u-turn, which will ditch the supercasino plans while allowing 16 smaller regional casinos to be built.
However, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has insisted that a letter to Scottish and Welsh MPs, from which the BBC gleaned its information, does not constitute a final decision
"There is a statutory requirement for the secretary of state to consult Scottish and Welsh ministers before making a decision how to proceed," a spokesman said.
"No final decision will be taken until ministers have had the opportunity to consider the views of Scottish and Welsh ministers."
A Scottish government spokesman confirmed: "We have received notification from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport of the intention to proceed with eight large and eight small casinos."
The letter does not mention the Manchester supercasino, which is notable for its absence from the note.
Angie Robinson, chief executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, told the Manchester Evening News that if the news is true, the decision is "little short of madness".
