Casino firm bickers with Indians
The Concord Hotel, which was once one of the most famous resorts in the Catskills, has come to the attention of a developer as possibly the ideal place to build a new casino.
According to the New York Times, after Empire Resorts has been scuppered in its plans to build a casino at Monticello Raceway, the developer has now turned its attentions to the dormant Concord Hotel.
On its 1,600 acres, Empire could build a luxury casino resort with over 1,500 slot machines, a conference centre and a horse racing track.
However, even the casino developer's latest plans could be foiled if the Mohawk Indian tribe has its way.
Although the tribe is Empire's partner in the casino venture, it will not back the move if it means abandoning plans for a $600 million casino at the Raceway.
The Mohawks said in a press release that the decision would be an "express breach" of its gambling agreements, which give sole casino rights in the Catskills to Indian tribes.
"We're dismayed and angered," said Lorraine M White, the Mohawk chief. "We will pursue the protection of our interests through the courts, if necessary."
For its part, Empire Resorts denied that it had given up on the Mohawk casino project, although it admitted to discussions with the owners of the Concord.
