Sweden Goes After Online Players

In Sweden, a recent investigation into possible tax evasion has widened to embrace online players and affiliates with guilty parties facing a back tax rate on any winnings as high as 57 percent along with severe penalties.

The nation’s tax authority, the Skatteverket, has been working with the National Economic Crimes Bureau and the Swedish Gaming Board for some months investigating online gaming in the Scandinavian country, which is infamous for its state monopoly on gambling, and has already asked several major companies to provide information.

Swedish media reports claim that the recent investigations found online players and marketing affiliates could be guilty to the tune of $66 million. All of the guilty parties so far identified by authorities are understood to be resident in and operating from Swedish soil with affiliates responsible for some $40 million of the total due.

In November, the Skatteverket claimed that online poker site MultiPoker.com owed $6.3 million in unpaid taxes as part of the Government's ongoing investigation into online gaming in Sweden.

According to reports in the media, investigators have been using Xenon web crawler technology to search and identify suspicious websites with tax authorities collaborating with counterparts internationally. It is understood that Swedish Internet infrastructure and domain providers have also been approached for confidential information including those handling online poker clients.
