Manchester To Dispute UK Government Decision
Officials in Manchester have announced that they are considering a legal challenge if a Government decision to axe the city's planned super-casino is finally confirmed.
According to reports from the BBC, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is planning to formalise his much discussed about-face on the UK land gambling policy later this month with the super-casino project awarded last year to the northern city by predecessor Tony Blair set to be the biggest casualty.
Officials in Manchester stated that they knew nothing of the u-turn by the Labour Government, which is still planning 16 smaller regional casinos, and the nation’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) insisted there has been no final decision made on the super-casino.
'There is a statutory requirement for the Secretary of State to consult Scottish and Welsh Ministers before making a decision on how to proceed,' said a spokesman for the DCMS.
'No final decision will be taken until Ministers have had the opportunity to consider the views of Scottish and Welsh ministers.'
The decision was reportedly outlined in a letter to members of the Scottish and Welsh local governments.
'We have received notification from the DCMS of the intention to proceed with eight large and eight small casinos,” said a spokesman for the Scottish Government.
'The letter merely pointed out that they decided to proceed with the eight large and eight small casinos,' stated the spokesman.
Manchester was a surprise winner when it was chosen as the location of Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino last year following the passage of a Parliamentary bill permitting the building of more gambling venues. However, the House of Lords rejected the plan in March and the scheme was put in doubt when Brown asked for a review into other ways to regenerate Manchester.
