Californians Approve Slot Expansion
Four tribes in the western American state of California have won the right to add up to 17,000 new slot machines to their casinos after voters approved Propositions 94, 95, 96 and 97 last week.
The Morongo and Pechanga tribes near San Diego can expand from 2,000 slots to 7,500 while the Agua Caliente and Sycuan tribes of Palm Springs can increase their numbers from 2,000 to 5,000 apiece.
Voted on as part of the state’s ‘Super Tuesday’ Presidential primaries, the passage will allow the tribes to build some of the world's largest casinos and boost efforts by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to use tribal gambling revenues to help curb the deficit. The Governor said the propositions merely reaffirmed compacts he signed with the four tribes last year and could bring $500 million a year to the state.
