$140m change in Missouri casinos?
The state of Missouri could see an extra $140 million generated in revenue if changes to the law regarding casinos are brought in.
A bill has been introduced to a Senate committee which could change the face of gambling in Missouri, where in effect punters could lose more money to fewer casinos.
Senate Bill 1052 proposes curbing the number of casinos in the state, but also scrapping the current loss limit.
If passed, the bill would mean that only 13 casinos could operate in the state, meaning that the one currently being built would be the last.
Under present laws, punters in Missouri can only gamble away $500 every two hours in a casino, but the bill would do away with this.
In a bid to raise revenue for the state and encourage competition among casinos, the bill also proposes an extra one per cent tax on casinos that generate more than $40 million in profit.
Senators say that some of the extra $140 million revenue raised could be ploughed into improving public schools and financing early childhood development schemes.
It is not the first time that some of these issues have been debated - they were raised in the state last year, but nothing came of the discussions.
