Canadian casino gears up for Olympics
With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games being hosted by Canada, the country's largest casino operator is planning to expand its accommodation to house all the extra guests.
Great Canadian Gaming Corp is set to develop an extra five-storey hotel, boasting 191 more rooms at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
The endeavour is expected to cost $118 million and be finished by late in 2009 or early in 2010, the London Free Press reports. River Rock Casino Resort can already accommodate plenty of punters in the 222 rooms it already has, but the Olympics provides the perfect backdrop for expansion. "By both increasing the number of hotel rooms at River Rock and upgrading its amenities and retail offerings, we will further establish the property as a destination resort," chairperson and chief executive Ross McLeod explained.
Great Canadian currently operates 14 casinos and five horse racing tracks among other facilities.
But it is not the only casino owner in the Vancouver area to be building on the expectation of more tourism.
Gateway Casinos Income Fund is also planning to construct a new 200-room hotel and convention centre, although this is expected to be open for business by as early as this summer.
