Councils 'wasted £1m' in casino bids
UK councils effectively threw away nearly £1 million on bidding for a supercasino which will now never get off the ground, according to the Liberal Democrats.
This week the government is expected to put all plans for a supercasino, in Manchester or anywhere else, to bed.
The city of Manchester has announced plans to take the government to court for £250 million after changing its mind about the supercasino.
Liberal Democrat shadow culture, media and sport secretary, Don Foster, said: "The government's casino U-turn has so far cost taxpayers almost £1 million and if Manchester decides to sue, taxpayers could end up facing a legal bill worth millions.
"Gordon Brown voted in favour of a supercasino and then changed his mind. We were then promised a report on alternatives to casino led regeneration, but it still hasn't been published.
"Ministers now owe taxpayers an explanation for leading councils on a wild goose chase, wasting huge amounts of public money and failing to offer realistic alternative options for regeneration."
Culture secretary Andy Burnham is set to give the green light to 16 new casinos across the UK, including eight small and eight larger casinos.
