Jefferson City To Vote
In America, voters in Jefferson City, Missouri, have been given the opportunity to decide whether to revoke a municipal ordinance banning casino boats passed over a decade ago.
City Council leaders voters last week by a six to four margin to place a resolution on a ballot in April on whether to overturn a ban approved by voters in 1995. City leaders are seeking more funds to pave streets and fix broken pipes and stated that casino gambling could be an important potential revenue source.
'All we're asking is 'can we let the voters decide whether we'll use riverboat gambling income as a potential revenue source’,” said Dan Klindt, a Member of the City Council.
'If the people vote 'no', then okay. We'll look for other ways.'
The idea remains controversial with one Council Member stating that he voted for the ballot measure in hopes that residents would vote it down and end the gambling debate. Jefferson City voters approved a riverboat gambling proposal in 1992 but then reversed themselves and approved a ban in 1995.
'Opponents were able to turn out in an overwhelming manner,' said local resident ML Allison.
'But the Council showed a total disregard for what they said. To me, it seems to be a total lack of respect for the people they represent.'
