US casino faces smoking ban
Gamers at a pair of casinos in the US state of Connecticut could soon be found sitting in smoke-free rooms.
Smoking could be banned at the Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun under plans from the state attorney general.
Officials hope to work with representatives from both casinos to roll out the ban, but have said that if negotiations breakdown an outright casino smoking ban would come into force in 12-months time.
Both Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun are built on tribal sovereign land, an issue that could make a ban hard to introduce.
However, state representative Peter Tercyak told the Hartford Courant that action needs to be taken to protect casino workers from smoke inhalation.
"Unless we hold on to the power and responsibility to jump in here, nothing will be done," he commented.
The ban has been supported by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union which won the right to support the 2,600 table game dealers employed at Foxwoods.
