Scarborough's casino posts losses
A Yorkshire casino has racked up big losses, the Yorkshire Post reports.
According to the newspaper, the Opera House Casino in Scarborough lost £7 million in 2005-06, its first year of trading - and an additional £838,000 in the next year.
This continuing loss is a heavy blow to the regional gambling centre - especially as it came despite a 28 per cent rise in customers over the twelve months.
Government-enforced increases in gaming duty are also expected to take a heavy toll on future takings.
The smoking ban and the outlawing of some types of slot machines are also ongoing industry concerns - which could lead to plans for additional casinos to be built in the area to be delayed, or even scrapped.
Operations director at the Opera House Rob Coldham said: "These figures clearly show a town like Scarborough will not be able to support another casino.
"We've now made provisions for slower growth than anticipated over the coming two years and hopefully will be back on track when the economy starts to recover."
He added: "We are very confident that other operators who understand the business will be very cautious about expanding their operations in Scarborough."
