UK Gambling Bill: Joint Committee publishes second report
The second report by the Joint Committee on the Draft Gambling Bill has been published today, the main thrust of which is that the government should attempt to limit the proliferation of Vegas style ‘super casinos’ on British soil. The report has been praised by domestic land-based casinos who had expressed concern that, post Gambling Bill, they will be swamped by the big US companies, eager to exploit the relaxation of legislation.
Committee chairman John Greenaway, said that the answer could be to create a ‘huge leisure destination’, which sports and arts facilities that will also appeal to non-gamblers, adding: 'We are concerned that the government's proposals do not do give sufficient emphasis to the need to secure significant regeneration benefits from the development of regional casinos.
Commenting on the Committee's latest report, Mike Smith, Rank's Chief Executive said: 'Once again, after a process a consultation with the industry, the Joint Scrutiny Committee has made a significant contribution to the reform of the UK's outdated gaming and gambling legislation. Rank very much hopes that the DCMS will accept the Committee's recommendations and work with the industry to secure new, workable legislation at the first possible opportunity.'
