Tasmanian Casinos threaten further industrial action

There has been no resolution in the battle between the casinos in Tasmania, Australia and the Federal Hotels association regarding pay and working conditions. Three weeks ago the staff of the two Tasmanian casinos went on strike to protest against what they perceived as poor pay and working conditions. The strike lasted for a weekend, and the union is now assessing offers being presented by Federal Hotels.

The current offer is for an 8.5 percent increase in pay- an offer which has not gone down well with union representatives. The offer has been turned down, with further industrial action possible should the suggested raise not be increased.

David O’Byrne, a union representative has said of the situation “We’re waiting for them to reconvene the negotiation. We’re hoping for that to occur very soon so we can all resolve this issue and move on”. Brendan Blomeley of Federal Hotels meanwhile, made the following statement, “We made our decision two weeks ago. We’ve implemented some very fair and reasonable pay increases for our staff and we stand by that decision”. The union predict that without a better offer and a resolution being reached, further industrial action will be inevitable.
