Owner of Australian online betting exchange CentreRacing, Terry Lillis has spoken out about recent extortion attempts made on his site. Lillis bought the horse racing division of Centrebet, one of Australia’s more successful bookmakers, in 2000, creating then the online site known now as CentreRacing. Lillis was a founder of Centrebet, which was then taken over by Australian casino company Jupiters Limited. Recently he received threats from online hackers asking for US$20,000 or they would shut down the CentreRacing site. This followed several attempts recently made on the Centrebet site.
Lillis approached Australian police who believed and told him, that he would be better off paying the extortionists the amount they requested. He then negotiated a new amount with the internet criminals, reducing the site’s ransom, only to be attacked by others once he had paid this amount. Another group of internet racketeers then shut down the online betting site. Eventually Lillis has turned to an American security firm to try and strengthen his website against attack. Although this measure should help, it will not make CentreRacing impervious to future attacks. The larger company which Lillis also founded, Centrebet, has been hit by extortionists four times in the past.
