Swiss casino industry's profits increase
Casinos in Switzerland made more money last year than they did in the previous 12-month period, it has been revealed.
Swissinfo.ch quotes statistics from the Swiss Casino Association (SCA) that show profits were up by 5.4 per cent in 2007.
Between the country's 17 casinos, $861.34 million was generated last year.
It is not known whether the Swiss gaming industry is continuing to grow in 2008.
Revenue streams in the world's largest gaming destination Macau are still on the rise, but the casino sector in the US and the UK has been hit hard by economic problems and it seems unlikely that earnings will be up this year.
Whether Switzerland will follow in Macau's footsteps or not remains to be seen but it does boast an impressive increase in casino visitors in 2007 from 4.7 million to five million.
The SCA cautioned, however, that there are problems ahead for the venues it oversees, with tax changes and a smoking ban both rumoured to be in the pipeline.
