Sic Bo: Three Dice, One Simple Decision

Sic Bo (“dice pair” in Cantonese) is a Chinese dice game that has become a fixture in live casino lobbies, often in lightning or multiplier formats. Three dice are rolled, and you bet on the outcome. The rules take a minute to learn; the useful part is knowing which of the fifty-odd bets are worth placing.

The basic bets

Big / Small. Big wins on totals of 11–17; Small on 4–10. Triples lose for both. Pays 1:1. House edge: 2.78%.

Odd / Even. Same structure for odd and even totals, triples lose. Also 2.78%.

These four bets are the backbone of sensible Sic Bo play. Nothing else on the table beats them.

Total bets

Betting on the exact sum of three dice, from 4 to 17. Payouts vary by total because probabilities differ: a total of 10 or 11 (the most common) pays around 6:1 with an edge near 12%; totals of 4 or 17 pay 60:1 with an edge over 15% on many tables. Payouts differ by operator, so the edge does too — it’s worth checking the paytable.

Single, double and triple number bets

  • Single number: pays 1:1 if the number appears on one die, 2:1 on two, 3:1 on three. Edge about 7.9%.
  • Specific double (e.g. two 4s): pays 10:1 or 11:1; edge 11–18% depending on payout.
  • Specific triple: pays 150:1 or 180:1; edge 14–30%.
  • Any triple: pays 30:1; edge about 13.9%.

Combination bets

Two specific different numbers appearing (e.g. a 2 and a 5). Pays 5:1 or 6:1; edge between 2.8% and 16.7% depending on the table. The 6:1 version is competitive; the 5:1 version is not. Again, read the paytable.

Lightning and multiplier versions

Live versions add random multipliers to selected bets each round, funded by reducing the base payouts. The headline multipliers are real, but the overall RTP of these variants is typically 1–2% lower than the standard game. The Big/Small edge in Lightning-style versions is still the lowest on the table but higher than 2.78%.

Patterns and systems

Each roll is independent. Roadmaps showing recent Big/Small results are history, not prediction. Betting systems don’t change the edge on any bet.

A sensible approach

Big, Small, Odd and Even at 2.78% are comparable to European roulette. Combination bets at 6:1 are nearly as good. Everything else is priced for excitement. If you want the occasional long shot, place a small part of the budget on it knowingly; just don’t mistake a 180:1 payout for a 180:1 probability — the true odds are 215:1.

Three dice roll fast. Set a budget before the first round and stop when you reach it, win or lose.
