Return to Player, or RTP, appears on almost every slot’s information page. Most UK slots sit between 94% and 97%. It’s a genuinely useful figure — but only if you know what it’s measuring.
The definition
RTP is the percentage of all money staked that a game is designed to pay back to players over its lifetime. A slot with 96% RTP is built so that, across many millions of spins, it returns £96 for every £100 wagered. The remaining 4% is the house edge.
The key phrase is over its lifetime. RTP is a long-run average generated by the game’s maths model and verified by the test house. It is not a promise about any session, day or player.
What it doesn’t tell you
It isn’t your expected return tonight. In a single session of a few hundred spins, actual returns can land anywhere from a fraction of what you staked to several times it. Variance dominates in the short run; RTP only asserts itself across an enormous sample.
It doesn’t describe the shape of the wins. Two games can share a 96% RTP while feeling completely different. One might pay small amounts constantly; the other might go long stretches without a win and then pay big. That difference is volatility, which we cover separately.
It doesn’t include bonus-round luck. The published RTP already accounts for free spins, jackpots and features. There is no extra return hidden inside the bonus.
Why the same slot can list different RTPs
Some studios release games with several RTP settings — for example 96.5%, 94.5% and 92.5% — and the operator chooses which to license. Two UK casinos can therefore offer the same title at different returns. UKGC rules require the RTP to be displayed in the game’s information panel, so it is always worth checking the version in front of you rather than the number quoted on a review site.
How to use RTP sensibly
- Compare like with like. A 97% slot against a 94% slot is a meaningful difference: over £1,000 of wagering, the expected gap is £30.
- Treat it as a tiebreaker, not a strategy. A higher RTP slows the average rate of loss; it doesn’t reverse it.
- Look at table games too. European roulette returns about 97.3%; blackjack with sound basic strategy can exceed 99%; some baccarat bets sit around 98.9%. Slots are rarely the highest-RTP option in a lobby.
- Remember bonus wagering. If you’re playing through a bonus, a higher-RTP game reduces the expected cost of completing it.
A quick illustration
Imagine 1,000 players each staking £100 on a 96% slot. Collectively they wager £100,000 and the game pays back roughly £96,000. Some walk away with £300; many walk away with nothing; the average is £96. RTP describes the average, not any individual.
